Recientemente estuve de viaje en Japón y dediqué un día para visitar Echizen, un pequeño y alejado pueblo dedicado desde hace siglos a la elaboración artesanal de
papel washi. Es un lugar precioso e interesante, donde las técnicas se transmiten de generación en generación dentro de una misma familia. Fue fascinante para mi ver la dedicación, paciencia y destreza para lograr papeles de altísima calidad hechos totalmente a mano.
I was recently
on a trip to Japan and I spent
a day visiting Echizen, a small and remote village that has manufactured washi paper for centuries. It is a splendid
and interesting place, where the techniques are passed from
generation to generation within the same family. It was fascinating
for me to see the dedication, patience and skills used for achieving high
quality papers made entirely by hand.
En este hermoso y apacible lugar vive Tadao Fukuda, un artesano dedicado a la técnica del
suminagashi quien abre las puertas de su taller para quien quiera conocer la técnica y ver como trabaja. Así que pasé un rato con él e hice un
papel suminagashi bajo sus consejos. Una maravilla!
In this beautiful
and peaceful place lives Tadao Fukuda, an artisan dedicated to the
technique of suminagashi, who opens the doors of his studio
for those who want to know the technique and see how he
works. So I spent some time with him and prepared
a suminagashi sheet
under his advice. A delight!

Pude visitar también Heizaburo, un taller donde se hacen papeles de gran tamaño. Visité el taller de
Ichibei Iwano quién pertenece a una novena generación de artesanos que fabrican un washi muy resistente y sin usar ningún tipo de blanqueador y tuve la suerte de verlo trabajando. Hice una visita al pequeño museo del washi y el museo-taller Udatsu, el precioso santuario Okamoto Otaki dedicado a la diosa del papel y claro, una tienda magnífica llena de tesoros!
I was also able to visit Heizaburo, a workshop who produce large-sized papers. I also visited Ichibei Iwano's workshop, an artisan who makes the highest quality washi; Iwano belongs to a ninth generation of artisans who make a very resistant washi without
using any type of bleach, and I was lucky enough to see him working. I had the chance to visit the small museum of washi and the Udatsu craft
museum, the gorgeous
Okamoto Otaki shrine
dedicated to the goddess of paper and of course, a magnificent store
full of treasures!
